Great post, but the figures are a bit larger than I have seen before. If you at the recent EPA report in the US for example they are quoting figures of 1.5% of total electricity consumption. That is still huge though at 61 billion kilowatt-hours.
You should also check out what Sun is doing to save energy. They are probably the leaders in this area at the moment. They have a great tour through their new datacentre online, and they have just launched a site called OpenEco which allows you to compare your performance with others.
