The US has expressed concern over illicit drug market in India. It has identified India as one of the 20 major hubs for illegal drug trafficking. Significant amounts of Opium poppy produced for legitimate pharmaceutical purposes get diverted to illegal markets. However Indian enforcement officials uphold that mandatory controls are in place.

It has recently been discovered that very large fields of poppy are grown in areas where before it was thought that there was no illicit cultivation. India has been listed in the “Majors List” of illegal drug transit and drug producing countries, a categorization of nations which are overwhelmed by drug related violence, crime and corruption.

Rajiv Walia, project coordinator with the UN Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) says that though certain quantities of opium produced for scientific purposes do flow into the illicit channel despite the best controls, the problem is not epidemic.

Undoubtedly, illicit drugs affect various facets of people’s lives. This is through drug-related crime and various sorts of hazards on and off the road caused by drug intake.

There is also the danger of overdose and permanent damage to the brain. Also, intravenous drug use can lead to HIV infections. To overcome the bane nations have to come together to fight the vice. No single country can tackle the problem of illicit drugs by itself. Drug syndicates are highly networked.

Therefore, law enforcement agents have to form networks of cooperation as well. To keep up with drug syndicates, countries need to pursue measures that will allow unfettered cooperation to take place.

Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh has been a repeated target for terrorist activity in recent times. On 25 August ‘07 two explosions rocked the city killing at least 60 people.

The police defused a third bomb. Just about three months ago, a powerful explosion had ripped through a massive congregation at the Mecca Masjid near Charminar, killing nine people.

One of the blasts on Saturday was at a crowded amusement park in front of the State Secretariat and another at a popular eatery in the busy Koti area. Both places are popular spots and were were packed with people enjoying the weekend evening.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy declared that it was a terrorist act. He stated his government’s resolve to see the drastic event to justice. However, according to TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu the blasts were the result of intelligence failure. He is of the opinion that the chief minister should resign from his position as administration in Andhra Pradesh has gone totally astray. The culprits responsible for the Mecca Masjid blasts have yet not been taken into custody.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil informed that investigators will try to determine if other countries are linked to the attacks, they will establish if there was a failure on the part of intelligence agencies in Hyderabad.

These terrorist attacks in Hyderabad once again highlight the grave threats to human security in India and other countries. While we mourn the dead and treat the injured, there is a need to reflect on the problem of terrorism and its huge implications for democracy and human security.

In the wizarding world Harry Potter turned of age when he became 17 years old and he was free to use magic, no longer having to worry about under-age wizarding regulations. That had made him happy indeed, but happier still is Danielle Radcliffe who turned 18 on July 23rd’07. He has gained access to a reported £20 million fortune. Up till now his earnings from the first five Potter films had been held in a trust fund which he has not been able to touch.

Despite his growing fame and riches he is known to have kept his feet firmly on the ground. He celebrated his 18th birthday by watching Lords Test cricket between India and England. He refused the offer of a private box at Lords and watched the game with his friends in the stands. When asked about his plans to start spending his fortune, he insisted that he did not want to welcome his adulthood by turning extravagant. At the age when most teenagers start earning meager amounts, he has a small fortune at his command, but as per reports he says that his lifestyle will not be altered much.

Daniel shares the modesty that characterizes Harry Potter, the character he plays on screen. From buying Chocolate Frogs from the food trolley for Ron to giving his Triwizard winnings to Fred and George, Harry never brags about his wealth and is always eager to share. The character of Harry Potter is loved widely as it teaches the readers the important lesson of humility. Even admist the likes of Draco Malfoy , Harry does not turn into an exhibitionist of wealth or of the fact that he is in fact the ‘Chosen One’.

Probiotic-The New Health Mantra

The market today is suddenly packed with probiotic products claiming to do wonders for maintaining a healthy body. So what exactly is probiotic and what can it do for our health?
Probiotic means healthy bacteria that help to maintain the acidic balance in the stomach. These good bacteria also help to produce vitamin B12 in the intestines. Both good and bad bacteria are present in each individual’s body, probiotic products help in neutralizing the harmful bacteria and microorganisms in our body. These products assist in regeneration of damaged intestinal mucous membrane which in turn helps in dealing with repeated infections.
Life today is characterized by increasing stress, irregular eating habits and indiscriminate use of antibiotics (I recently did a 5 day course of antibiotic as my ear piercing was not healing!); these factors contribute to digestive disorders. It is here that probiotics come to the rescue by improving digestion of lactose, reducing acidity and preventing antibiotic associated diorrhoea.
Indian food has many probiotic products that can be made at home like dahi(curd),Naan,Dhokla,Chaas, idli and khameeri roti. Probiotic products available in the market include milk, ice creams and yogurt. Cultured bacteria are added in large numbers to the commercially prepared products to make them probiotic. Brands like Amul, Nestle and Mother Dairy have ventured into the probiotic market segment.
However one of the biggest drawbacks of such products is that they must be constantly refrigerated. This is required for the good bacteria to remain alive and active at all times. The cold storage facilities available in smaller towns and the electricity problems in bigger cites pose a threat to these products.
